Optical Assistant

• Location: Chiswick, West London

• Salary: £28,000–£30,000, depending on experience

• Hours: Full Time or 4 days considered

• Practice Hours: 9:30am–5:30pm

• Contract: Permanent

• Benefits: 20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, pro rata, and occasional discretionary bonuses

The Opportunity

Insightful Recruitment is working with a well-established independent optical practice in Chiswick to recruit an experienced Optical Assistant.

This is a patient-focused practice with a loyal customer base and an exceptionally stable team. Several employees have worked within the business for more than 15 years, creating a supportive and welcoming environment where everyone works together.

The practice offers a varied range of mid-to-high-end frames and lenses. The emphasis is on listening to each patient, understanding their needs and recommending the right product rather than pushing the highest-value sale.

The Role

This is a varied, all-round Optical Assistant position. The practice operates as a close-knit team, so everyone contributes to the smooth running of the business.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Dispensing single-vision, bifocal and varifocal lenses

• Advising patients on frames, lenses, coatings and suitable product options

• Supporting pre-screening, depending on experience

• Welcoming patients and providing excellent customer service

• Answering telephone calls and managing appointments

• Processing orders and updating patient records

• Completing general administration and filing

• Building long-term relationships with returning patients

• Supporting colleagues across all areas of the practice

There may also be a requirement to provide very occasional holiday or sickness cover at sister practices in Richmond or Slough.

About You

Formal optical qualifications are not essential, but you should have previous experience working within an optical practice.

The successful person will be:

• Confident supporting patients throughout their visit

• Comfortable discussing frames, lenses and coatings

• Patient focused rather than heavily target driven

• Trustworthy, reliable and dependable

• Friendly, positive and able to build rapport

• Happy to contribute across dispensing, customer service and administration

• A genuine team player who is looking for a stable, long-term position

• Willing to learn the practice’s products, systems and ways of working

Additional training can be provided to the right person, so attitude, reliability and team fit are just as important as technical knowledge.

Working Pattern

The practice ideally requires someone four or five days per week. 

The exact working days can be discussed, and the practice can accommodate either an immediate start or a start within approximately one month notice
